ABOUT US

Leah and Channing Smithson's portrait with double exposure

CLSS Studio explores the human condition using portraits that aren’t created as a representation of a person, but are more concerned with our psychological terrain. Combining Channing Smithson’s 20+ years in the medical field along with Leah Smithson's interdisciplinary art background, their work examines natural phenomena, nature, including the human body itself, and how it inter- twines with technology and the world around us. They use a unique blend of traditional mediums, i.e. painting, ceramics, sculpture, and recently land, along with various new media (architectural projection, XR, and 3D animation).

PROJECTS

THE UNSPOKEN - An exhibition in connection with the New Museum's Incubator, NEW INC. The Unspoken is multi-channel video with sculpted seating that contains housing for a subwoofer.

The Unspoken explores resilience through movement and sound. Humanoid figures writhe and transform their bodies against a changing backdrop, with whispers vibrating through a central sculpture. The work also draws from similar influence as Louise Bourgeois' "Spiders," particularly the way those monumental sculptures, as a reflection of Bourgeois' mother, simultaneously evoke vulnerability and a sense of security. Inspired by Smithson’s family's experience caring for her father after a massive stroke left him with severe aphasia, this installation animates his lost voice while aiming to evoke unease followed by comfort, prompting reflection on existence and human potential. Special thanks to Channing Smithson, NEW INC, and EY Metaverse.
